I bought this tent to use camping on the beach, it was perfect, packs down small and lightweight, and so convertible! Let me start by saying I have never been camping before nor have I pitched a tent anywhere but my living room floor as a trial run when I received it. I arrived late to the beach campsite and it was already dark. I put this tent together in high winds, by myself, with nothing more than a lantern in around 15 minutes.. It was a piece of cake! The stargazing feature is awesome! I used a queen size air mattress and it fit right to the edges which was fine for me as I had my car for storage. There is ample storage under the fly as well enough for a 75L back pack and folded camp chair etc. All the other tents on the beach were flapping and leaning while mine was solid as a rock! My only wish is that they made this same tent in a 4-6 person size.. I would buy it tomorrow!

I researched for a couple of weeks before finally settling on the Kelty TN3. I am glad I did. I am a long time Kelty consumer, starting with a couple of Red Cloud backpacks back in the early 80’s. I still have them and use them regularly. I trust the Kelty name. So, I looked at multiple tents, wanted light weight but a 3 man tent. My wife insisted we be able to see the stars at night, and I insisted that it pack up in a small enough size that it didn’t poke out of the pack or have to be attached to the outside. My wife uses a new Redwing 40 and I am packing the Redwing 50. Smaller packs for multiple night backpacking so we need to conserve the space available. I vacillated back and forth between the 2 man and 3 man because of the weight and size savings but finally settled on the TN3. I am glad I did. We have used it now a couple of times and the 3 man has plenty of room for two people and some extra stuff, clothes, pack, gear, etc. I love the extra room and the 1 lb of extra weight over the TN2 is worth the added luxury. This tent has quality construction and materials that are put together in a package that will take on the outdoors. We experienced wind and the tent held its own without a hint of a problem. It sets up fast, is easy to do. I like the zippers and door shapes, one being a main door and the other not as big, but plenty big enough to get in and out of. The large door for putting in our double wide Big Agnus sleeping bag with pads after it was all set up was perfect. The rain cover or fly is the best feature of this tent, the ability to roll back half of the fly and feel like you are outside with the stars and then easily rolling it down if needed in case of inclement weather. The vestibules are great and I added a large lightweight tarp to fit under the tent and vestibules to give me added area for my packs. I truly like this tent and can’t wait to set it up again and again. The only thing I would like to add is a better lantern hanger and a gear loft somehow. But with the 3 man there is plenty of room for the gear elsewhere but not in a loft. If anyone has any ideas for a gear loft, let me know. I don’t want to block the night sky and I am sure this was part of Kelty’s decision not to include a loft.

More like a two man (adult) tent that is lightweight and well made. Good for backpacking.

Let me start by saying that I have only used this tent two times. If I have any major issues or improvements I’ll do my best to amend this review. The tent comes in a rectangular pouch that easily fits into most back packs. My son and I divided the contents of the pound into our two packs and had no problems with space. Upon first setting it up I noticed a few things. First, the material is very light weight. To me, it feels very flimsy. This is great for back packing (low weight) but I’m not sure how well it will hold up when it gets used regularly. I do recommend getting a footprint (or tarp) to go underneath this tent to help keep the bottom from ripping on roots, rocks, etc. Despite the material does seem to be very well made and it was very simple and quick to setup.

Would buy again.

Great product. We ended up getting snowed on in the Rockies and the tent held up. Cold but held up. Spacious for 2 people plus some hiking gear with the packs left in the vestibule.

Wicked awesome design features!

Awesome tent! The design feature that allows the campers inside of the tent to lower the rain fly without leaving the tent is a sweet feature. The rain fly and tent have color coded straps where they meet the tent poles (also color coded) and that is a wicked smart feature that makes set up easy and fast. There is plenty of room for two people in there (and three if you want to get cozy, three full grown men anyway). I would recommend this product to a friend who is looking for a step up from their tent from Walmart or Sears.

Great product, but pay attention to dimensions

I’m now a car-camper, as my backpacking days are over. I bought this for the great mesh airflow and the sky-viewing possibilities, which are important to me. They did have both! Superb construction and easy set-up (once you pay attention to color-coding on the tent poles and which-end-is-which on the tarp). However, returned it because it was lower and smaller than I needed. I did read the dimensions, and I know that “3-person” generally means “2-person” in usability, but didn’t quite visualize this until I set it up. However, for back-packers, I can’t imagine a better option…especially if you are hiking to a place with great views.

Great for bike camping on a rail trail.

Purchased it for bike camping, it is light and easy to cary on a bike. Easy set up, but do a trial run before you go camping. Used it on the Greenbriar Trail in WV. One of the nights we had 2 inch all night rain and we were dry and our panniers in the vestibule were dry as well. Highly recommend this tent.
